Deputy President Mashatile Urges Farmers to Engage on Land Reform to Broaden Access

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has called on commercial farmers to negotiate with the government to make land more accessible under the land reform programme. Visiting the Overberg District in the Western Cape, Mashatile emphasised that while expropriation is legally permitted, it is not the government’s preferred starting point. Instead, he urged, “There must be negotiations, engagements, and … we are going to continue to buy the land, so let’s negotiate.”

Oversight Visit to Overberg: Land Reform in Action

From 4 to 6 September 2025, Mashatile chaired an oversight visit to the Overberg District, alongside the Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development, Mzwanele Nyhontso. The aim was to illustrate government efforts to fast-track land reform, enhance community development, and propel the Land Reform Programme forward .

On Thursday, he toured Klein Ezeljacht Farm 126 in Theewaterskloof Municipality, a farm that produces apples, pears, grains, and livestock. Supported through the Land Development Support Programme, this farm demonstrates how previously disadvantaged farmers can reach commercial viability when given appropriate assistance .

Support to Emerging Farmers: Training, Mentorship & Financial Aid

During engagements with farming sector representatives, Mashatile underscored the government’s role in offering training, mentorship, and financial aid to emerging farmers. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing persistent challenges such as limited funding access and climate change impacts on food security .
