Deputy President Mashatile
By Mpho Moloi
Deputy President Paul Mashatile will represent President Cyril Ramaphosa and the people of South Africa at Mozambique’s 50th national independence anniversary celebrations. The event is set for Wednesday, 25 June 2025, at Machava Stadium in Maputo, a historic venue where Mozambique’s independence was first declared in 1975.
A Special Invitation from Mozambique
President Daniel Chapo of Mozambique has personally invited South Africa to join the celebrations, highlighting the strong ties between the two nations. This milestone event will bring together leaders and citizens to mark 50 years since Mozambique gained freedom from Portuguese colonial rule on 25 June 1975.
Theme of the Celebration
This year’s festivities will revolve around the theme “50 Years of Independence: Consolidating National Unity, Peace and Sustainable Development.” It reflects Mozambique’s desire to celebrate its achievements while looking ahead to a future of unity, peace, and growth. According to the South African Presidency, “The people of Mozambique will use this occasion to acknowledge their achievements, reflect on the challenges they face, and how to turn Mozambique into a prosperous, democratic and peaceful country in the next 50 years.”
A Day of Reflection and Honour
The celebrations will begin with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Mozambican Heroes Monument in Maputo. Deputy President Mashatile, alongside other dignitaries, will pay tribute to the heroes who fought for Mozambique’s independence. This act will honour the sacrifices made during the long struggle led by the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO), which ended with independence under the leadership of Samora Machel.
From there, the focus will shift to Machava Stadium, where the main anniversary event will take place. The stadium’s historical significance adds a special layer to the occasion, as it was the site of Mozambique’s independence proclamation 50 years ago.
Mozambique’s Journey Since 1975
Mozambique’s road to independence was tough, marked by a decade-long armed struggle against colonial rule. After achieving freedom in 1975, the country faced further challenges, including a 15-year civil war between FRELIMO and RENAMO that ended in 1992. Since then, Mozambique has worked to rebuild and grow, with recent economic boosts from natural gas discoveries. However, issues like poverty, unemployment, and regional unrest, especially in Cabo Delgado, remain hurdles to overcome.
