On Saturday, Deputy President Paul Mashatile will deliver a eulogy for the late Membathisi Mdladlana, former Minister of Labour and High Commissioner to Canada, at a Special Official Memorial Service at the Jakes Gerwel Hall, University of the Western Cape. Mdladlana, who passed away on 18 October 2024 at the age of 72, was honoured with a Category 2 Special Official Funeral in recognition of his contributions to South African labour and education sectors.

Mdladlana’s career spanned South Africa’s transition to democracy, beginning with his service as a school teacher and principal before joining the first democratic Parliament in 1994. Appointed as Minister of Labour by President Nelson Mandela in 1998, he served through successive presidencies until 2009, implementing transformative labour policies that advanced workers’ rights. His dedication extended internationally, where he represented South Africa as High Commissioner to Canada and Ambassador to Burundi, strengthening diplomatic ties.

In his role as Acting President, Mashatile praised Mdladlana’s enduring impact, noting his leadership in forming the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) and advocating for teachers’ rights. Mdladlana’s commitment to justice, equality, and the nation’s educational development left a legacy remembered by colleagues and officials alike, including National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza and National Council of Provinces Chairperson Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, who described him as a champion of democracy and education .

This memorial reflects South Africa’s gratitude for Mdladlana’s lifelong service, as the nation’s flag flies at half-mast until the end of the ceremony.
