Deputy President Mashatile Prioritizes Urgent Resolution of Land Claims

Deputy President Paul Mashatile

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has emphasized the importance of addressing land claims promptly, stating that it is a sensitive issue that deserves immediate attention.

During a session in the National Assembly on Friday, Mashatile discussed the government’s progress in resolving land claims as part of the land reform program. He clarified that as of June this year, there were 5,407 outstanding old order claims, contrary to the 6,600 suggested by a Member of Parliament who posed a question to him.

Mashatile assured Members of Parliament that progress is being made in resolving these claims.

Furthermore, the Deputy President announced that the government has implemented various measures to expedite land reform programs. He mentioned the Expropriation Bill, which is currently under consideration by the National Council of Provinces.

Additionally, Mashatile informed MPs that the Land Court Amendment Bill, which includes provisions for communal land transfer, registration, title, and the appointment of a land rights enquirer, has been submitted to the President for assent. He explained that the bill aims to regulate the administration and use of communal land within the framework of applicable laws, including spatial planning and land use management.

Mashatile also highlighted the revision of the Property Valuation Act, which now provides a precise scope for the Office of the Valuer-General and a methodology to determine fair and just compensation.

In addition to these measures, the government is actively identifying land needs within cities and towns, prioritizing land for human settlements, as well as industrial, economic, and urban agricultural development. This strategy aims to modify spatial patterns and promote socio-economic advancement.

The Deputy President further revealed that the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Land Reform and Agriculture is continuously reviewing options to improve the overall financing of the Backlog Reduction Strategy introduced by the Commission.

Mashatile firmly believes that these efforts will accelerate the settlement of old order claims, allowing the government to resolve this issue within a reasonable timeframe.
