Deputy President Mashatile Holds Fruitful Discussion with South Sudan’s First Vice President

Deputy President Paul Mashatile of South Africa has recently concluded a productive discussion with South Sudan’s First Vice President, Dr Riek Machar.

The two leaders met on Tuesday to discuss important issues pertaining to the implementation of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

This meeting marks Deputy President Mashatile’s visit to South Sudan on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa, as a Special Envoy to monitor the progress of the R-ARCSS and address any challenges that could impede the upcoming elections.

During the meeting, Deputy President Mashatile expressed his satisfaction with the discussions held, stating, “I just completed a very fruitful discussion with Vice President, Dr Riek Machar, where we discussed a number of important issues that will allow South Sudan to move forward in the implementation of the R-ARCSS.”

The Vice President warmly welcomed Deputy President Mashatile and his delegation.

The concerns raised by Vice President Machar included issues related to refugees and the country’s permanent Constitution.

However, both leaders have agreed to address these concerns and remain committed to completing the peace process and holding free and fair elections within the agreed timeframe of February 2025.

Deputy President Mashatile emphasized the need for South Africa’s assistance in resolving the challenges faced by South Sudan, and he will further discuss these issues with President Ramaphosa.

In response to the meeting, Acting Press Secretary Puok Both Baluang in the Office of the First Vice President stated that the two leaders also discussed bilateral relations and the progress and challenges of implementing the R-ARCSS.

They also explored opportunities for strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries. Baluang quoted Dr Machar as saying, “South Sudan and South Africa share common values and principles, and he looks forward to the two nations’ relationship and collaboration growing.”

Vice President Machar also provided an update on the progress of the R-ARCSS and the prerequisites for conducting free, fair, and credible elections in South Sudan.

He assured the visiting delegation of his commitment to the full implementation of the agreement. The R-ARCSS, signed in August 2018, aims to bring an end to the five-year civil war by promoting power-sharing arrangements among warring parties.

Deputy President Mashatile expressed his gratitude and admiration, on behalf of his delegation, for the warm welcome they received in South Sudan and the strong bonds between the two nations.

He expressed confidence that the discussions held would pave the way for resolving most of the challenges and ultimately lead to the successful completion of the peace process and the conduct of a credible election.

As the Special Envoy, Deputy President Mashatile’s role is to support the Transitional Government of National Unity in South Sudan in implementing the R-ARCSS. His visit to South Sudan underscores South Africa’s commitment to peace and stability in the region.
