Mashatile meets Rand Water
In a move to address the growing water supply challenges facing Gauteng and other municipalities, Deputy President Paul Mashatile has held strategic talks with Rand Water’s leadership. As Chairperson of the Water Task Team, established by President Cyril Ramaphosa, Mashatile’s primary focus is on fostering partnerships to navigate the water scarcity plaguing various regions in South Africa.
Rand Water, hailed as Africa’s biggest water utility and one of the top global players, serves over 11 million people, providing potable water across Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State, and the North West provinces. The utility’s significant role places it at the core of efforts to find immediate solutions to the imminent water crisis affecting millions.
Speaking on Wednesday, the Deputy President emphasised the urgency of the situation. “In our quest to avoid a water crisis in Gauteng province and elsewhere, strategic engagements and collaborations with Rand Water are crucial for finding timely solutions to these challenges,” he stated.
These discussions also allowed Mashatile to understand the measures Rand Water is implementing to maintain efficient water provision in Gauteng. The utility’s commitment to ensuring constant water access is pivotal for the region’s socio-economic stability, impacting areas like health, food security, and overall societal welfare.
Praising Rand Water’s efforts, the Deputy President highlighted the significance of their work in ensuring sustainable water access for millions. His visit to the Rand Water Zuikerbosch Plant in Vereeniging shed light on the operational side of these efforts. The Zuikerbosch Station 5A water purification plant symbolizes a proactive step towards bolstering the water supply system, aiming to meet current and future needs while securing water availability.
Mashatile expressed his readiness to work in close quarters with Rand Water’s leadership to preempt the looming water scarcity crisis. Recognizing water as a vital lifeline, he referenced the constitutional mandate ensuring everyone’s right to adequate food and water, emphasizing the government’s duty to uphold these fundamental rights.
The visit further garnered support from key governmental figures, including Police Minister Bheki Cele, Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister David Mahlobo, and Cooperative Governance Deputy Minister Parks Tau, illustrating a unified front in tackling South Africa’s water challenges.
