In a recent meeting held in Cape Town, Deputy President Paul Mashatile reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fostering an ongoing conversation with inter-faith organisations, aiming to address a wide range of societal issues. His message was clear: the government respects and protects all individuals, regardless of their religious beliefs or lack thereof, equally.

Speaking to an assembly of inter-faith leaders, Deputy President Mashatile emphasised the crucial role these organizations play in the fabric of South African society. “As interfaith leaders, you represent the starting point from which acts of kindness and generosity should originate. I greatly esteem you as the leaders of our society, as you are the individuals who regularly interact with communities on a daily basis,” he stated, highlighting the impact religious leaders have on promoting unity and togetherness.

Reflecting on the nation’s journey from the apartheid era, Mashatile praised the collective effort of different religious groups in overcoming the discriminatory policies that had once strained the country’s unity. He criticised the apartheid regime for its unfair prioritisation of Christianity over other religions, which had fostered division among South Africans.

“Today, it is truly remarkable to see people from diverse backgrounds joining forces to achieve great things, overcoming obstacles, and fostering unity for the betterment of our communities,” Mashatile remarked, celebrating the post-apartheid era’s spirit of inclusivity and mutual respect.

Mashatile also pointed to the significant progress South Africa has made in addressing social issues, transitioning from an authoritarian regime to a democracy that prioritises the welfare of its citizens. He noted the government’s efforts in providing education, healthcare, and basic services to millions, particularly to those less fortunate.

Highlighting the contribution of religious organisations in this endeavour, Mashatile said, “Today, our churches, mosques, synagogues, and temples serve as cornerstones of society, providing vital education, feeding the poor and needy, and speaking out against injustices in our nation with a consistent and strong approach.”

The Deputy President also praised the Western Cape’s inter-faith leaders for their role in fostering unity among different religious denominations. “I also appreciate the Western Cape inter-faith leaders for uniting most of these diverse religions and denominations under one umbrella body. We have a shared responsibility to bring all religions together in our efforts to promote national unity and social cohesion,” he said
