On Friday, 1 September 2023, Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Deputy Minister Makhotso Sotyu will kick off National Arbor Month and reveal the winners of the prestigious Arbor City Awards in Polokwane, Limpopo.

National Arbor Month

This annual event, which takes place in September, aims to raise awareness and educate South Africans on the importance of preserving, safeguarding, and planting trees for both environmental and human-related benefits.

Under the theme “Forests and Health,” as adopted by the United Nations Collaborative Partnerships on Forests, this year’s Arbor Month celebration emphasizes the crucial roles played by forestry and tree planting in creating sustainable and healthy communities.

Forests provide numerous health benefits, including nutritious foods, medicinal resources, fresh air, clean water, and recreational spaces.

To mark the official launch of the 2023 National Arbor Month campaign, Deputy Minister Sotyu will visit significant locations such as the Green Project Low-Cost Housing, Seshego Healthcare Clinic, and the Matongoni Recycling Facility.

During these visits, she will take part in tree planting activities and preside over the National Arbor City Awards (NACA) ceremony.

The NACA honors municipalities that have demonstrated outstanding contributions to the Ten Million Trees Programme and embraced greening initiatives within their programs.

Additionally, schools that have initiated and implemented successful greening projects will also be recognized and rewarded during the ceremony.
