Unaccredited Honorary Degrees Alert: Celebrities Honoured by Unregistered Institution Called Trinity International Bible University
Johannesburg – The Department of Higher Education and Training has issued a stern warning about Trinity International Bible University’s legal standing in South Africa. According to authorities, the institution is not a recognised private higher education establishment and lacks the authorisation to confer any qualifications, including those of an honorary nature.
Higher Education, Science and Innovation Minister, Professor Blade Nzimande, expressed his concerns following a flurry of activity on social media showcasing honorary doctorates awarded to some of South Africa’s most prominent public figures by the unregistered establishment.
“We have previously engaged with Trinity International Bible University, urging them to cease their unlawful operations and to align themselves with our regulatory framework,” Minister Nzimande disclosed. He also mentioned the Department’s move to consult with the Council on Higher Education (CHE) regarding the protocol for issuing honorary degrees and the entities permitted to do so.
Prof. Nzimande further added, “There’s absolutely no objection from our side towards Trinity International Bible University or the distinguished personalities honoured. However, the continued oversight or disregard for the Department’s regulations by the institution’s management is troubling.”
In light of the situation, the Department is contemplating “more comprehensive and decisive action” not only against Trinity International Bible University but also against any party flouting the established regulations.
The Minister has extended an olive branch for dialogue, expressing the Department’s readiness to elucidate their stance to both the university in question and the celebrated individuals involved.
“Our primary duty,” Nzimande emphasised, “is safeguarding the credibility of the qualifications awarded within our higher education framework and ensuring the integrity of our post-school education and training system at large.”
