Tensions ran high outside the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court today as police arrested several protestors attempting to force their way into the courthouse while displaying the Vierkleur flag, a symbol of South Africa’s colonial past. The Department of Justice and Correctional Services issued a statement condemning both the attempt to disrupt court proceedings and the flag’s presence.

Inside, the court was handling the matter of Piet Groenewald and his son Stephen Greef, accused of assaulting an employee. Outside, the atmosphere turned chaotic with demonstrators trying to assert their presence in the court in a manner deemed illegal and provocative.

Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola lauded the prompt response of the South African Police Service (SAPS), “The swift action by SAPS to restore order at the court reaffirms the sanctity of our justice system. Intimidation or any unlawful interference with court proceedings will not be tolerated.”

The Minister addressed the contentious matter of the protestors displaying the Vierkleur, a flag with significant historical baggage, “Its presence at a public protest is a stark reminder of a painful era defined by racial oppression and discrimination.”

The Vierkleur flag was the national flag of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR), often referred to as the Transvaal Republic, and fell out of favor following the Anglo-Boer War and the end of apartheid in South Africa. The 2019 landmark ruling by the Equality Court made it clear that such symbols, which resonate with the apartheid regime’s ideology, are considered hate speech and are an affront to the spirit of the nation’s current democratic values.

“As such, the protest and particularly the display of the Vierkleur flag cannot be viewed merely as an expression of cultural heritage but as an act of defiance against the principles of our Constitution,” the justice department said.

The department announced that the incident would be referred to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) for further investigation, underscoring the serious nature of this act.
