This announcement comes shortly after fellow artist Cheez Beezy declared his departure from Penya Play Productions on 28 December 2024. Cheez Beezy, a prominent figure in the label, expressed his gratitude towards fans and outlined his future plans:
“Official Year End Statement. Dear Beezy Gang (Fans), promoters and all partners. Thank you for the undying continued support over the years for the Brand Cheez Beezy. Implications for Penya Play Productions
Penya Play Productions, a notable label in the South African music industry, is home to several artists, including the popular Lesotho artist Ntate Stunna. The recent departures of Deejay Zaca and Cheez Beezy have sparked discussions about the label’s future direction and its relationships with its artists.
In response to the departures, Ntate Stunna, who is also the owner of Penya Play Productions, clarified his role within the label:
“As you know, I’m not only an artist but also the owner of Penya Play Productions. However, I want to emphasize that the label is a separate entity with its own structure, team, and decision-making process. Just like any other business, Penya Play Productions has a CEO, management team, and staff who work tirelessly to support our artists and releases. While I’m proud to be the owner, I don’t make decisions alone, and not every move the label makes reflects my personal opinions or interests. I want to assure you that our label’s mission remains the same: to support talented artists, create great music, and bring value to our fans. As an artist, I’ll continue to share my music, passions, and personal thoughts with you. But when it comes to Penya Play, I want to be clear that it’s a business with its own identity, goals, and decision-making processes. Thanks for understanding, and let’s keep making great music together! Button! ▶️”
Controversy Surrounding “Kea U Rata” Performance Rights
The departures have also led to controversies involving other artists associated with Penya Play Productions. Selloane Thakanyane, who recorded the song “Kea U Rata” at Penya Play Studios, received an email from the label’s CEO, Teboho Mosamo, terminating her performance rights to the song. The email cited her public endorsement of Cheez Beezy’s statements as the reason for this decision:
“Dear Ms. Sellwane Thakanyane, I hope this email finds you well. Re: our song [Kea U Rata] (the ‘Song’), which was written and composed by Thaabe Letsie/Penya Play Productions (the ‘Copyright Holder’), and recorded by you. As you are aware, [Thaabe Letsie/Penya Play Productions] granted you the right to perform the Song. However, due to your recent public endorsement on social media of statements made by [Cheez Beezy], who breached their contractual obligations with us, we have been left with no choice but to terminate your performance rights for the Song, effective immediately. Your actions have caused harm to our business and compromised our relationships with other artists. We cannot continue to allow you to perform and profit from our intellectual property while you publicly support individuals who disregard contractual agreements. Please note that this termination applies to all performances, including live shows, broadcasts, and online streaming. You are expected to cease all performances of the Song immediately and remove any recordings or videos of the Song from your social media platforms and websites. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out. Sincerely, Teboho Mosamo CEO Penya Play Productions”
Selloane Thakanyane responded to the termination by expressing her support for Cheez Beezy and highlighting the lack of formal agreements regarding the song’s rights:
“Phoso e bile ho joetsa Cheez Beezy hore we love him and wish him well. Che I never had rights of the songs anyway, there was no paperwork done that benefited us on the progress made on it, so the benefit was on gigs alone!”
