Death Toll in Southern Ethiopia Road Accident Rises to 71

Tragic Death Toll

The tragic death toll from a road accident in Sidama state, southern Ethiopia, has climbed to at least 71, according to the latest update from local police officials. The Sidama Police Commission Traffic Prevention and Control Directorate confirmed in a Facebook post on Sunday night that “68 males and three females are known to have died in the accident so far,” citing Chief Inspector Daniel Sankura.

Details of the Incident

The devastating accident occurred around 5:30 pm local time (1430 GMT) on Sunday when a vehicle plunged off the road into a river in the Eastern Zone of Sidama state, specifically in Bona Zuria Woreda. The Sidama Police Commission reported that two other individuals sustained severe physical injuries, but the number of passengers aboard the vehicle at the time remains unclear.

Blurred images released by the local health bureau depict a chaotic scene, with crowds of people attempting to pull the vehicle from the water. Additional photos shared online showed bodies, some covered with blue tarpaulin, lying on the ground near the crash site.

The Impact of the Tragedy

This accident is one of the deadliest in Ethiopia’s recent history, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety in the country. Located about 300 kilometres (180 miles) south of the capital Addis Ababa, the site of the accident has drawn widespread attention and sorrow.

Road Safety in Ethiopia

Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous nation, frequently grapples with road accidents due to poorly maintained roads, speeding, and overcrowded vehicles. Many rural roads lack basic safety measures, including guardrails and proper signage. These conditions contribute to the high number of road-related fatalities each year.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Transport has previously outlined plans to improve road infrastructure and driver training, but the implementation of these measures has been slow. Sunday’s incident underscores the urgency of addressing the country’s road safety crisis.

Government and Community Response

Local authorities and emergency responders swiftly mobilized to the scene, offering assistance to the injured and beginning the recovery process for those who lost their lives. Health officials have called for additional medical resources to treat the survivors’ injuries and provide support to affected families.

The Ethiopian government has expressed condolences to the families of the victims and vowed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. However, systemic improvements to road infrastructure and traffic enforcement remain crucial to preventing similar tragedies in the future.
