DBE Announces School-Based Youth Job Opportunities: Applications Open 22 April 2025

Department of Basic Education (DBE)

The Department of Basic Education (DBE), in collaboration with the Department of Employment and Labour (DEL), has launched an exciting initiative to create job opportunities for South African youth through the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) Phase V. Starting in June 2025, the programme will provide over 204 000 job opportunities for young people aged 18–34 across the country, with applications opening on 22 April 2025.

A Boost for Youth Employment in Schools

The BEEI Phase V, supported by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) as the implementing agent, aims to disburse stipends to beneficiaries while targeting youth aged 18–34. This phase follows the success of Phases I–IV, which created more than 1.1 million job opportunities for youth since March 2020. With a target of over 200 000 job opportunities across South Africa’s nine provinces, Phase V is set to continue empowering young people by providing them with meaningful work experience in schools.

The programme will commence in schools from June 2025 and run until the end of November 2025. Applications for these opportunities will be open from 22 April 2025 to 9 May 2025, and interested youth are encouraged to apply via the SAYouth.mobi platform. The DBE has made it clear that no walk-ins at schools will be allowed, ensuring a streamlined and fair application process.

Job Opportunities Across Provinces

The DBE has outlined the allocation of job opportunities for BEEI Phase V, detailing the number of positions available in each province. From May 2025, a total of 158 402 opportunities will be funded through the UIF Labour Activation Programme, while an additional 46 274 opportunities will be supported by non-UIF funds. Here’s a breakdown of the opportunities per province:

• Eastern Cape (EC): 28 709 opportunities (22 218 UIF funds, 6 491 non-UIF funds)
• Free State (FS): 11 408 opportunities (8 829 UIF funds, 2 579 non-UIF funds)
• Gauteng (GP): 36 186 opportunities (28 005 UIF funds, 8 181 non-UIF funds)
• KwaZulu-Natal (KZN): 45 558 opportunities (35 336 UIF funds, 10 322 non-UIF funds)
• Limpopo (LP): 27 366 opportunities (21 179 UIF funds, 6 187 non-UIF funds)
• Mpumalanga (MP): 17 495 opportunities (13 540 UIF funds, 3 955 non-UIF funds)
• Northern Cape (NC): 4 838 opportunities (3 744 UIF funds, 1 094 non-UIF funds)
• North West (NW): 13 687 opportunities (10 593 UIF funds, 3 094 non-UIF funds)
• Western Cape (WC): 19 329 opportunities (14 959 UIF funds, 4 370 non-UIF funds)

In total, 204 676 young South Africans will benefit from this initiative, gaining valuable skills and work experience while contributing to the education system.

Skills Development and Support for Youth

The BEEI Phase V focuses on equipping young people with both soft and hard skills needed in the workplace. Participants will gain practical experience through daily school-based tasks, such as assisting with communication, reading, and writing skills for learners. The programme also promotes professionalism, self-confidence, and self-esteem, preparing youth for future career opportunities.

The initiative includes various roles to support schools, such as:

• Curriculum Assistants: Assisting teachers in classrooms, including e-Cadres who help with ICT integration in teaching and learning.
• Care and Support Assistants: Providing psychosocial support to learners.
• Laboratory Assistants: Supporting lessons in workshops and laboratories.
• Sports and Enrichment Assistants: Helping with sports, culture, and maintenance activities.
• Handymen and Women: Assisting with school building upkeep, supervised by mentors.

The programme also prioritises inclusivity, ensuring opportunities for disabled youth and young girls. Schools are encouraged to focus on youth from their local communities, reducing the need for travel expenses and ensuring that job opportunities benefit those who need them most.

Training and Pathways to Success

Beyond providing immediate job opportunities, the BEEI Phase V offers training to prepare participants for long-term success. The IDC will manage training in areas such as financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and workplace readiness. Additional training will focus on supporting the “Reading Champions” initiative, which aims to improve reading and literacy in Foundation and Intermediate Phases.

The programme also includes a focus on inclusive education, with assistants undergoing orientation to support learners with disabilities. The second phase of training will target youth placed in special schools, equipping them to provide the necessary support for learners with additional needs.

A Call to Action for South African Youth

The DBE and DEL are calling on all eligible youth to apply for these opportunities, which can serve as a stepping stone to greater career prospects. “The BEEI leverages on the fact that there is a public school in every community in South Africa, which is an enabler for the government to massify the provision of job opportunities to the most vulnerable youth, who, under normal circumstances, might have to leave their communities to access opportunities,” the DBE stated in their media release.

The departments are also working with various organisations to provide further training and pathways to other opportunities, ensuring that participants remain engaged and can make a positive contribution to society after the programme ends.

How to Apply

Youth interested in applying for the BEEI Phase V opportunities can do so via the SAYouth.mobi platform from 22 April 2025 to 9 May 2025. The application process includes interviews and contracting, which will take place between 19 and 31 May 2025.
