Dan Morokane Appointed as New Eskom Group CEO

Dan Marokane

Johannesburg – The power utility Eskom has officially welcomed Dan Marokane as its new Group Chief Executive, a step that comes amidst the pressing need to resolve the ongoing electricity crisis in South Africa.

Having assumed his new role this past Friday, Marokane is now the man at the helm with a daunting task ahead. The Eskom board, demonstrating faith in Marokane’s qualifications and experience, issued a statement on Friday emphasizing the urgency of the mission in front of the newly appointed chief.

“We expect Morokane and his leadership team to accomplish at least two critical tasks. Firstly, they must address the current business challenges. Load shedding must become a thing of the past. Secondly, they need to reposition and restructure Eskom to enable growth and sustainability,” said Eskom Board chairman Mteto Nyati.

Marokane is up against significant challenges as he takes control of the power utility, with expectations set high for immediate improvements. The board has outlined specific priorities for his first 100 days, including the evaluation of the Generation Operational Recovery Plan, the review of Eskom’s unbundling efforts, and the fostering of relationships with crucial internal and external stakeholders.

Recognising the pivotal nature of these initial stages, the board promises further engagement with the media and the public after these crucial 100 days, by which time Marokane should be well-acquainted with the complexities of Eskom and the wider energy sector.

“Morokane has the full support of the Eskom Board. Eskom employees are excited to welcome him back into the organisation. We invite all South Africans to rally behind him as he steers Eskom toward stability, reliability, and sustainability,” Nyati communicated, showcasing a united front.

Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan initially announced the appointment of Marokane in December 2023, sparking conversation on the future path of Eskom. Boasting an impressive resume with over two decades of leadership under his belt and a background in Chemical Engineering and business administration, Marokane is no stranger to the energy behemoth. His previous tenure at Eskom saw him in crucial roles from 2010 to 2015, including his pivotal position as Head of Group Capital.

Although his appointment was made public at the end of last year, Marokane’s entry into the power utility was poised for no later than 31 March 2024.
