Dan Malesela
By Sello Masilo
Dan Malesela, head coach of Marumo Gallants, has officially returned to his position after being placed on “special leave” two weeks ago. His reinstatement follows two significant losses during his absence and comes at a critical time for the club as they battle to regain stability in the Betway Premiership.
Leadership During Malesela’s Absence
During Malesela’s leave, Sundra Govinder was brought in as an “additional assistant” to work alongside Duncan Lechesa, who had joined Marumo Gallants at the start of the 2024/25 season. Govinder, a former Kaizer Chiefs head of development, led the team for two matches, both of which ended in defeat.
• Orlando Pirates 8–1 Marumo Gallants: A heavy loss to the league giants dealt a significant blow to team morale.
• Sekhukhune United 1–0 Marumo Gallants: A narrow loss further highlighted the team’s struggles.
These back-to-back defeats prompted the club’s management to reinstate Malesela, recognising his experience and leadership as key to turning the season around.
Malesela’s Return
According to reports from within the club, Malesela resumed his training duties on Monday. Players have expressed optimism about his return, citing his familiarity with the team and his tactical expertise as vital to their Premiership campaign.
Malesela is expected to lead the team from the bench in their upcoming matches, starting with their next fixture against Richards Bay FC on January 4, 2025.
Upcoming Matches and Key Challenges
Marumo Gallants are currently 13th in the Premiership standings, with only 10 points from 11 matches. The upcoming games are crucial for the team’s survival in the league, especially as they face fellow strugglers in their next fixtures:
1. Richards Bay FC (January 4, 2025)
• Venue: Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium, Bloemfontein
• Significance: Richards Bay, also struggling this season, recently parted ways with head coach Brandon Truter. This match presents an opportunity for Marumo Gallants to secure a much-needed victory and build momentum.
2. Cape Town City (January 11, 2025)
• Significance: Cape Town City sits just one point above Marumo in 12th place, making this a critical six-pointer.
3. Chippa United (January 18, 2025)
• Venue: Eastern Cape
• Significance: An away game against Chippa United will conclude Marumo’s league fixtures for January.
4. Nedbank Cup Round of 32 (Weekend of January 25, 2025)
• Opponent: To be determined at the draw on January 9 in Johannesburg.
• Importance: The cup competition offers a chance for Marumo to shift focus from the league and potentially achieve success in a knockout format.
