The Democratic Alliance (DA) is in mourning following the death of their member, James Selfe, who passed away on Tuesday afternoon at the age of 68. The announcement was made by DA party leader, John Steenhuisen.

In an official statement, Steenhuisen said: “The Democratic Alliance (DA) mourns the passing of party stalwart, James Selfe, who passed away late this afternoon. James departed us peacefully, surrounded by family and loved ones, following a lengthy battle with illness.”

The party has extended its deepest condolences to James Selfe’s family during this difficult time. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Sheila, and three daughters—Chloe, Stephanie, and Emma,” Steenhuisen added.

An Influential Life in Politics

James Selfe’s contributions to South African politics date back to the late 1970s and 1980s, a period during which he served as a researcher for the Progressive Federal Party (PFP), the forerunner to the DA. His efforts were pivotal in combating divisive apartheid laws enacted by the National Party. James later became the party’s communications director and subsequently its executive director.

In 1994, the country’s first democratic elections saw Selfe elected to the National Council of Provinces, where he played a significant role in the Constitutional Assembly that helped frame South Africa’s democratic Constitution. Over his nearly 30-year parliamentary career, he participated in various portfolio committees, the most notable being the Committee on Justice and Correctional Services. His oversight here was instrumental in ensuring that fairness and accountability were maintained within South Africa’s judicial system.

A Legacy of Accountability and Justice

Steenhuisen highlighted James Selfe’s crucial role in building the DA into South Africa’s official opposition party. “James operationalised the establishment and fortification of the DA, turning it into a formidable force,” he noted.

James was also pivotal in pioneering the DA’s “lawfare” programme, which has been responsible for significant legal judgements in post-democratic South Africa. These judgements have set legal precedents that continue to strengthen public accountability. His efforts against corruption were instrumental in critical cases, including the “Zuma spy tapes,” “Nkandla,” and exposing state contracts awarded to Bosasa.

“In many ways, James was a pioneer in South African opposition politics,” said Steenhuisen. “He was among the first to challenge the unfettered power of the ANC’s majority, proving that opposition could serve as society’s ultimate watchdog.”

Steenhuisen emphasized that the DA’s growth into a vast, diverse, and inclusive political home for millions of South Africans would not have been possible without Selfe’s vision and hard work. Even the youngest members of the party today hold him in high regard for his contributions.

Remembering James Selfe

Beyond politics, James Selfe was cherished for his sharp wit, deep love for his family, and affection for his miniature schnauzers. According to Steenhuisen, “We will miss James for his wry, sharp wit, his deep love for his family, and his proud annual proclamation of ‘Dezemba’ at the end of every parliamentary year. Despite the personal toll politics can take, James savoured life’s sweetness, forming wonderful connections with those around him.”

Steenhuisen stressed that James’ values and principles are ingrained in the DA’s core, ensuring that his legacy will endure. “James demonstrated immense resilience, even in the most trying circumstances—a quality that serves as an example for politicians,” he said.

Reflecting on James’ lifelong dedication to South African democracy, Steenhuisen summed up the sentiment shared by many: “James Selfe is one of the unsung heroes of South African democracy, having dedicated his life to the liberation of the South African people, and the betterment of our country as a newly-realised democracy. His legacy will live on in the corridors of parliament, and in the memories made with family, friends, and colleagues alike. Fare thee well, James. Thank you for everything.”
