Mantsopa By-elections
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has successfully retained control of Ward 7 in the Mantsopa Local Municipality in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District of the Free State. Candidate Nicholas Van Wyk is set to lead the municipal ward following the resignation of Tania Halse, a long-serving councillor who has transitioned to a role in Parliament.
The recent by-election saw the unveiling of preferred candidates from the three established parties. Motumi David Madonsela represented the African National Congress (ANC), Leon Nicolas Van Wyk represented the DA, Koba Magriet Van Wyk represented the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and Mamajemane Arcelia Sekolanyane represented the Truth & Solidarity Movement (TSM).
The election results show a strong hold for the DA in Ward 7, with 58.72% of the vote. The ANC followed with 38.35%, the EFF with 2.66%, and TSM with 0.28%. These results are comparable to the 2021 local government election, where the DA received 61.4%, the ANC received 31.45%, the EFF received 3.63%, and TSM had 0% of the vote.
The DA Free State Premier Candidate Dr. Roy Jankielsohn, along with other party members, were involved in campaign efforts, as were leaders from the ANC and EFF. The Mantsopa Local Municipality is currently governed by the ANC, which holds the majority of seats on the council.
The Congress of the People (Cope), with one seat on the council, did not register a candidate for the by-election.
