DA Praises Progress
By Nkosana Khumalo
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Parliament has expressed satisfaction with its efforts to hold the executive accountable since the establishment of the Government of National Unity (GNU). The party believes that its participation has contributed to a more robust and transparent governance framework.
Enhanced Parliamentary Oversight
DA Chief Whip George Michalakis highlighted the party’s instrumental role in strengthening parliamentary oversight mechanisms. He noted that Parliament is in a better state than it was six months ago, with the DA leading significant initiatives, including:
• Blocking Inappropriate Appointments: The DA played a pivotal role in preventing John Hlophe, leader of the MK Party, from securing a position on the Judicial Service Commission.
• Removal of Former Speaker: The party was instrumental in the ousting of former Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, advocating for leadership that upholds democratic principles.
• Establishment of Oversight Committees: The DA successfully advocated for the creation of a parliamentary committee dedicated to overseeing the Presidency, ensuring greater accountability at the highest levels of government.
Commitment to Accountability
Michalakis reaffirmed the DA’s dedication to its constitutional mandate of holding the executive accountable, regardless of coalition dynamics. He emphasized that the party would not hesitate to hold President Cyril Ramaphosa accountable should any reports implicate him in the Phala Phala theft scandal. The DA has been vocal in its criticism of the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) decision not to prosecute individuals involved in the Phala Phala incident, calling for a review of this decision to ensure transparency and justice.
Legislative Initiatives
The DA has introduced several bills aimed at enhancing governance and stability, including:
• Anti-Corruption Legislation: Proposals designed to strengthen anti-corruption measures within government institutions.
• Coalition Stability Bills: Legislation intended to provide a framework for coalition governments, promoting stability and effective governance.
The party believes that these initiatives have a better chance of success within the current political landscape, given the collaborative nature of the GNU.
Navigating Coalition Dynamics
The formation of the GNU marked a significant shift in South Africa’s political landscape, with the DA assuming leadership roles in Parliament and the executive. Michalakis acknowledged the complexities inherent in coalition politics, noting that compromise is essential. He stated, “As much as we managed to get some of our policies included in what ultimately gets tabled, so our GNU partners will also have to win or lose some of what they propose.”
