Bloemfontein – The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Free State has submitted a court application to halt the illegal occupation of land in Lourierpark, Bloemfontein in Mangaung Metro, the party announced on Wednesday.

“The party warns that the chaos currently unfolding in Bloemfontein is indicative of the anarchy expected nationwide under a potential ANC/EFF coalition,” a DA spokesperson said, referring to the occupation that began on Friday, 1 March.

Residents of the area who have begun erecting shacks claim their requests for official land allocation to the Mangaung Metro have been ignored. “The illegal occupants say the requests for allocation of sites to Mangaung Metro have fallen on deaf ears,” commented one of the occupants.

In contrast, the Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) has denounced the land invasions. “All relevant departments of the City are on the ground to make assessments and intervene, and MMM land invasion unit in the Human Settlement directorate has opened a case,” stated Qondile Khedama, spokesperson for the MMM.

Mayor Gregory Nthatisi explained the precariousness of the situation, emphasizing the importance of finding equilibrium within the community. “The situation that we are dealing with is not as easy as take, move, do as you wish,” Nthatisi remarked. “We have to consider that we are addressing people coming from difficult situations.”

Roy Jankielsohn, DA Free State Premier Candidate and Freestate Leader, expressed stern criticism of the government’s response to the occupation. “The DA has instructed its legal representatives to approach the High Court to force the Metro to enforce the court order obtained on Saturday and grant appropriate relief against those subverting the order,” Jankielsohn said in a statement.

During a site visit by the DA, the profound distress of local communities including Lourierpark and Pellissier became evident. “The illegal land grabs in the Mangaung Metro Municipality prove that the ANC government is failing at the most basic task of ensuring land, housing, and title deeds to residents,” Jankielsohn continued.

Councillor Dave McKay of DA Ward 18 has been commended for exhibiting leadership and seeking to defuse tensions. The DA has pledged ongoing scrutiny of the situation and insisted upon the enforcement of the court order by the municipality.

“The DA calls upon residents of the province to unite against this disorder and support a DA-led government capable of averting the dangerous precedent set by the Metro and ensuring the rule of law,” concluded Jankielsohn
