The Democratic Alliance (DA) has announced that their Federal Leader, John Steenhuisen, will be embarking on a week-long tour of the Free State province in South Africa.
The tour aims to address the energy crisis that the province is facing and to rally support for the DA ahead of the 2024 elections.
The tour will kick off with a visit to Frankfort, a town in the Mafube Municipality. Frankfort is considered ground zero for energy independence from Eskom and Nersa. However, the municipality has been accused of blocking organized communities from using independent power producing infrastructure to become energy self-sufficient and independent.
Rural Maintenance Free State (RFS), a private energy distributor, recently lost a court appeal against Eskom, forcing them to switch off a portion of their solar farm during the day. This means that the unused solar energy is wasted while the area experiences load shedding. According to Rural Maintenance, the result of the appeal may have been different if the Municipality had prioritized the needs of its community rather than political considerations.

In addition to addressing the energy crisis, the tour will also focus on the DA’s nationwide Election 2024 registration drive. Steenhuisen and his team will engage with civil society bodies and organized communities, aiming to build support and strengthen the party’s chances in the upcoming elections.
The tour will culminate in a press conference where the DA’s Free State Premier Candidate will be announced. This candidate will play a crucial role in leading the province towards a successful election campaign in 2024. The DA hopes to capitalize on the rampant infighting and factionalism within the ANC, which has weakened their support base.
Joining Steenhuisen on the tour will be the DA Free State Provincial Leader, Roy Jankielsohn, the DA Free State Provincial Chairperson, Werner Horn, and other local DA Public Representatives.
