John Steenhuisen
John Steenhuisen, the Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), has issued a warning regarding the dangers of maintaining the status quo under the governance of the African National Congress (ANC). He also spoke of the alarming possibility of a coalition between the ANC and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) during the DA’s ‘Rescue’ rally held at Currie’s Fountain Stadium in Durban on Saturday.
According to Steenhuisen, such a political partnership could presage a bleak future for South Africa, reminiscent of the turmoil witnessed amid the 2021 riots. He appealed to the electorate, urging them to vote for the DA in order to avoid these potential disasters.
Democratic Alliance (DA) leaders gathered in force to rally support for the party in the leadup to the forthcoming elections. Among them were KZN premier candidate Chris Pappas, DA National Chief Whip Siviwe Gwarube, and National spokesperson, Solly Malatsi. The event underscored the DA’s commitment to winning over the hearts and minds of KwaZulu-Natal’s electorate—a province long loyal to the African National Congress (ANC) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
Addressing the attendees, Steenhuisen siad, “Democrats, there is no place I’d rather be this morning than right here with you at Curries Fountain, in my beautiful home province of KwaZulu-Natal! As this election campaign has unfolded, KwaZulu-Natal has become a symbol of hope.”
He emphasised the province’s readiness for change, highlighting the dire need to address ongoing challenges such as water supply issues, land reform, and the “disaster” state of the ANC. Moreover, Steenhuisen voiced grave concerns over a potential “Doomsday Coalition” between the ANC and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), recalling the violence and chaos that ensued in the province in 2021.
The DA leader outlined his party’s commitment to reducing food costs, protecting social grants from corruption, and creating job opportunities as part of their mission to rescue South Africa and KZN from governance failures.
Steenhuisen said the success story of uMngeni Municipality as evidence of the DA’s potential to bring improvement and hope to the province.
In sync with Steenhuisen’s message, premier candidate Chris Pappas echoed the sentiment of hope and the drive for change, encouraging the people of KZN to embrace the fight for a better future. “There’s a feeling that people believe in change,” said Pappas, urging everyone to spread a message of hope and unity across the province to reclaim it from corruption and mismanagement.
