In a recent development, the Democratic Alliance (DA) Mangaung Caucus has expressed its disappointment and concern over the removal of their councillor, Maryke Davies, as the Mangaung Speaker.

The ANC Regional Chairperson and SALGA Provincial Chairperson, Lawrence Mathae, has been elected as her replacement.

Johan Pretorius, Leader of the DA Mangaung Caucus, has stated that they will consult with their legal teams and leaders to determine the best course of action regarding the legality of the motion that led to Davies’ removal.

The DA argues that the vote of No Confidence undermines the principles of democracy and accountability.

Pretorius further criticizes the ANC for using misleading and false accusations as the basis for the Motion of No Confidence. He highlights that the ANC’s acting Speaker for the day even ignored a DA councillor’s allocated speaking time, indicating a disregard for rules and regulations. “This behavior not only tarnishes the integrity of the political process but also raises concerns about the ANC’s commitment to democratic values.”

During Davies’ tenure as Speaker, she demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the efficient operation of the council, guided by core values such as freedom, fairness, opportunity, and diversity. Pretorius commends her impartiality in defending the rights and privileges of all members, upholding the principles of freedom of expression, and basing her rulings on relevant legislation. Her integrity has been commendable throughout her tenure, according to Pretorius.

On the other hand, the ANC in Mangaung congratulates Lawrence Mathae on his election as the new Council Speaker. ANC spokesperson Ncamile Nxangisa argues that the DA Speaker was democratically removed from office, emphasizing the “scrupulous arrangements” under which she held the position.
