DA Defends Minister Dean Macpherson Amid Corruption Allegations

Democratic Alliance (DA)

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has firmly rejected recent allegations of corruption against Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson, asserting that such claims are unfounded and politically motivated. The accusations surfaced following an opinion piece by political consultant JJ Tabane, which insinuated that Minister Macpherson bribed journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh to publish negative reports about the Independent Development Trust (IDT), aiming to replace its CEO with an individual aligned with the DA.

EFF Files Corruption Charges

In a related development, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have filed a criminal case against Minister Macpherson, accusing him of interfering in the IDT’s tender processes. The EFF alleges that Macpherson is misusing state institutions to benefit “white minority capital.”

DA’s Response to Allegations

DA spokesperson Willie Aucamp categorically denied the allegations, stating, “The DA categorically rejects the allegations being made against Dean Macpherson, Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, primarily by political consultant JJ Tabane, who moonlights as a media personality.” Aucamp emphasized that these claims coincide with Minister Macpherson’s efforts to combat corruption within his department, particularly concerning an R800-million scandal involving an oxygen tender awarded irregularly by the IDT.

Minister Macpherson’s Anti-Corruption Initiatives

Minister Macpherson has been proactive in addressing corruption within the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure. In December 2024, he launched an independent investigation into the IDT following allegations of irregularities in the awarding of a Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Oxygen Plant tender worth over R800 million. The investigation aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the tendering process.
