The Democratic Alliance (DA) commends the Fezile Dabi District Municipality for effectively leveraging the South African Local Government Association’s (SALGA) initiatives to enhance governance and climate action. Following the enactment of the National Climate Change Act on 23 July 2024, municipalities are urged to align their climate action plans with national legislation.

SALGA has been instrumental in assisting Fezile Dabi in developing its Climate Change Action Plan, focusing on sustainable practices such as renewable energy projects and waste management strategies. These efforts aim to mitigate climate change impacts locally, contributing to both regional resilience and global environmental objectives.

In addition to environmental initiatives, SALGA’s Supply Chain Management (SCM) training has been pivotal for municipalities in the Free State, including Fezile Dabi. This training emphasizes best practices in financial management, promoting transparency and accountability in procurement processes. By equipping municipal officials with the necessary skills, SALGA ensures that public funds are utilized efficiently, enhancing service delivery within the district.

Furthermore, Fezile Dabi has benefited from SALGA’s Multi-Stream Municipal Governance Training program, conducted earlier this year in Clarens. This program provided public representatives with a comprehensive understanding of applicable legislation, the oversight role of councils and committees, and the intricacies of budgeting and financial management.

The DA emphasizes the importance of political office bearers comprehending legislative frameworks to perform their oversight duties diligently. We applaud SALGA for these critical initiatives and encourage all municipalities to engage with such training programs and resources. Through these partnerships, we can collectively elevate the standard of local governance, ensuring that South African citizens receive quality services and responsible leadership.
