Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Barbara Creecy has encouraged developed countries to provide financial and technical support to developing countries for the mitigation and adaptation efforts for climate change

Barbara Creecy, South Africa’s Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, has announced the extension of the Environmental Assessment Practitioners Association of South Africa’s (EAPASA) mandate as the exclusive registration body for environmental assessment practitioners. This extension solidifies EAPASA’s role until 07 February 2026, granting it additional time to regulate the vital sector.

Initially appointed for a five-year tenure starting on 08 February 2018, EAPASA’s authority was set to expire on 7 February 2023. However, the department had previously extended this period up to 7 February 2024. The latest announcement further prolongs EAPASA’s mandate, allowing the minister to thoroughly explore and determine the future framework for regulating these professionals.

According to the department’s statement, the extension positions EAPASA to maintain its regulatory duties, underscoring the importance of ensuring that environmental assessments are conducted by qualified and accountable individuals. As development projects continue to intersect with environmental conservation, the oversight of EAPASA is seen as integral to aligning economic growth with sustainable practices.

EAPASA’s accomplishments and methodologies are transparent and can be reviewed on their website, www.eapasa.org. The site offers resources, standards, and vital updates for environmental assessment practitioners and stakeholders.

For those seeking additional details regarding this extension, inquiries are being directed to Alvan Gabriel via email at agabriel@dffe.gov.za.

The department encourages the public and interested parties to review the official notice detailing EAPASA’s continuing authority, which can be accessed through the provided direct link: https://www.dffe.gov.za/sites/default/files/legislations/nema.eapasa.singleregistrationauthority_g50046gon4292.pdf
