The Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court was the scene of a tense hearing on Thursday as four suspects stood accused in connection with the disappearance of six-year-old Joslin Smith.

Charged with the grave offences of trafficking persons for the purposes of exploitation and kidnapping are Jacquen Rowhan Appollis, Steveno Dumaizio van Rhyn, Racquel Chantel Smith, and Phumza Sigaqa. The quartet responded to these allegations during their initial court appearance.

Joslin, a young girl from the Diazville community in Saldanha Bay, has been missing since the 19th of February, 2024. At the time, she was last seen under the care of her mother’s boyfriend. The subsequent investigation launched to uncover her whereabouts has become a rallying point for individuals and groups alike.

“It is heartbreaking. Our entire neighbourhood is in a state of shock; this could be anyone’s child,” shared a Diazville local who declined to be named.

As community activists handed out flyers and the local neighbourhood watch increased their patrols, various non-governmental organizations, police forces, and government representatives joined forces in the shared mission to ensure Joslin’s safe return.

The magistrate’s office confirmed that the four accused will remain in custody until the case reconvenes. “The matter is adjourned to the 13th of March, 2023 for bail information,” stated the presiding magistrate.

“We’re doing all we can to find Joslin and support the family during this unimaginable time,” an NGO spokesperson said outside the courtroom. “We will not rest until she is back home.”
