Public Works Infrastructure

The Council for the Built Environment (CBE) is set to host the Inaugural Public Works Infrastructure Summit on 1 April 2025. Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson is expected to deliver the keynote address at the summit, which will explore strategies for optimising asset life cycles, leveraging public-private partnerships, and ensuring equitable infrastructure investments.

Summit Objectives and Themes

Under the theme “Turning South Africa into a construction site: Growing the economy and creating jobs,” the summit aims to address critical issues in the built environment sector. Key topics include conducting comprehensive infrastructure audits, promoting ethical governance, and exploring innovative measures for effective asset and property management. Additionally, discussions will focus on green social infrastructure and strategies to maximise its commercial value for public benefit.

Ministerial Commitment to Asset Management

Earlier this month, Minister Macpherson announced plans to formalise the department’s approach to public asset management by introducing technical task teams in cities nationwide. This initiative seeks to attract private sector investment to revitalise public assets for productive use, aligning with the summit’s objectives of fostering collaboration between public and private sectors.

Diverse Participation

The summit will convene a diverse group of stakeholders, including CEOs and leaders from the broader built environment and construction industry, financial institutions, insurance companies, developers, asset and property managers, real estate entities, and government officials such as the Minister, his deputy, and MECs. The collective goal is to discuss and agree on collaborative efforts to transform South Africa into a dynamic construction hub.

About the Council for the Built Environment

The CBE, an entity of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, serves as a regulator of the built environment professions, providing regulatory frameworks within various statutory councils. It plays a leadership role by offering strategic direction and advising the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure on policy matters impacting the built environment sector.
