COSAFA Banyana Banyana
By Sello Masilo
COSAFA Banyana Banyana, South Africa’s youthful squad, started their 2024 COSAFA Women’s Championship campaign with a 1-0 win against Namibia at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Tuesday evening. Tshegofatso Motlogelwa’s late goal, five minutes before full-time, secured the win after a tough and scrappy match.
Namibia, the 2022 semi-finalists, dominated much of the first half but couldn’t capitalize on their chances. South Africa, sponsored by Sasol, returned stronger in the second half, with a more spirited performance under coach Maud Khumalo.
Though South Africa had several missed opportunities, including a disallowed goal by Keisha Hendricks, the match remained goalless at the halftime whistle. Namibia’s captain, Zenatha Coleman, provided leadership and created chances, but the Namibian team was unlucky as the woodwork denied them a potential goal late in the game.
However, in the dying moments, Motlogelwa’s counterattack, set up by Isabella Ludwig, gave Banyana Banyana the decisive goal. This victory places South Africa second in Group A, behind Eswatini, who secured an emphatic 6-0 win over Seychelles earlier in the day.
Isabella Alexa Ludwig walked away with the player of the match award, reflecting her key role in the victory.
Banyana Banyana will face Eswatini in their next group match on Friday, a crucial encounter that could decide who tops the group. The match will take place at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium, following a change in venue due to water damage at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
