A total of 173 inmates from Correctional Services schools are ready to sit for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, set to run from 21 October to 27 November 2024. This marks a significant step in their academic journey and personal rehabilitation, providing an opportunity to build a better future.
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has expressed pride in the level of preparedness among the inmates, highlighting the timely completion of their academic syllabus and the rigorous assessments they have undergone throughout the year. With the help of educators across 18 correctional schools, all candidates have been equipped with the necessary study materials and guidance to excel during the exams.
Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale, the National Commissioner of Correctional Services, praised the commitment and hard work of the educators. He emphasized the transformative power of education in the rehabilitation process, noting that formal education opens up opportunities for growth and reintegration into society. “Education not only empowers offenders with knowledge but also offers them a path to a new life,” Thobakgale remarked.

In 2023, Correctional Services schools achieved an impressive 93% overall pass rate, with nine schools attaining a 100% pass rate. This success is attributed to the conducive learning environments within correctional facilities and the department’s commitment to providing access to education and skills development for inmates. These programs aim to help offenders reintegrate successfully into society upon release.
This year, technological advancements like the Intelsat Telematics System at the Johannesburg Correctional Centre have played a vital role in enhancing learning, giving inmates and educators access to valuable study resources. The DCS remains confident that, with these tools, the 2024 cohort will continue to excel.
In addition to focusing on academics, the department maintains a strict adherence to exam protocols set by the Department of Basic Education, ensuring the exams proceed smoothly and without incident. The professionalism and dedication of officials overseeing the exams have contributed to maintaining an incident-free record for NSC examinations in correctional facilities.
The department’s commitment to inmate education underscores the importance of providing meaningful rehabilitation programs. Thobakgale encouraged all matriculants to take full advantage of this opportunity as part of their journey towards personal development.
