Congress of the People (COPE)
The Congress of the People (COPE) has made an announcement regarding the rescheduled launch of its elections manifesto. Initially postponed, the significant event is now set to take place this coming Saturday, 06 April 2024, at the Motjibosane Sports Grounds located in Hammanskraal, Tshwane. The event will kick off from 10 am.
In an official statement released by the party, it was expressed that “The Party is returning to Hammanskraal Township to respond to the many challenges facing this community over the past 15 years of mismanagement, misrule, and poor leadership under the current government. Hammanskraal reflects the challenges faced by many townships and rural areas across the country, where most of our people live and have been neglected for many years. We have heard the struggle of our people in Hammanskraal, therefore, the party will deliver its manifesto launch there, acknowledging the specific challenges faced by this forgotten community and further underscoring commitment to addressing them.”
The decision to host the manifesto launch in Hammanskraal underscores the party’s dedication to acknowledging and addressing the acute challenges faced by communities that have been seemingly neglected by the prevailing governance structures. This move is seen as a signal of COPE’s intention to directly engage with the pressing issues at the grassroots level.
In light of the manifesto launch’s rescheduling, Erick Mohlapamaswi, the acting General Secretary of COPE, shed light on the reasons behind the eleventh-hour change of plans in a prior statement. He cautioned, “Following the announcement of our ‘readiness’ today (Friday), we have since received requests from potential partners who have expressed interest in collaborating with COPE and be part of the manifesto launch ahead of the 2024 general elections. As a result, the number of supporters to be bused to the venue has increased and this has created capacity challenges as the venue may not be able to accommodate the host of supporters expected to attend. The party’s national executive committee has taken a decision to postpone the launch to avoid potential disasters such as stampedes.”
