Lesotho authorities have made the decision to deny South African performer Zodwa Wabantu entry into their country.

The decision came after concerns were raised regarding Wabantu’s provocative performances, during which she chooses not to wear underwear.

In a letter addressed to the Manager of Elibo Guest House in Maseru, the minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, Home Affairs, and Police, Lebona Lephema, clearly stated that Wabantu would not be allowed to enter the country. Citing public indecency and the violation of laws established in the Panel Code Act 2010, Section 56, Lephema deemed Wabantu’s performances unacceptable within the conservative values upheld by Lesotho.

“We are not prepared to wait until a crime is committed. Lesotho is a Christian Nation which jealously guards and cherishes its Christian values, and as such, we are not prepared to compromise these values,” expressed Lephema in the letter.

This is not the first time that Wabantu has faced bans from other African countries. In 2017, the late Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe issued a warning stating that Wabantu would not be welcome to perform in the country. Similarly, in 2022, she was banned from entering and performing in Malawi.

This decision in Lesotho highlights the ongoing debate surrounding the boundaries of public decency and individual artistic expression. While some argue that Wabantu’s performances push societal norms, others believe that her actions cross the line into indecency and offend the sensibilities of the public.
