Confirmed Earthquake Hits West Rand in Gauteng

The Council for Geoscience (CGS) has officially confirmed that an earthquake took place on Saturday evening, July 22, 2023, at approximately 6:46pm near the Harmony Gold Mine in the West Rand, Gauteng.

According to the South African National Seismograph Network (SANS), the earthquake registered a local magnitude of approximately 2.98.

The epicenter of the earthquake was pinpointed south of Johannesburg, specifically 2 kilometers south of Harmony Doornkop Gold Mine.

Reinforcing the confirmation, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi also acknowledged the occurrence of the earthquake.
