The Council for Geoscience (CGS) has officially confirmed that an earthquake took place on Saturday evening, July 22, 2023, at approximately 6:46pm near the Harmony Gold Mine in the West Rand, Gauteng.

According to the South African National Seismograph Network (SANS), the earthquake registered a local magnitude of approximately 2.98.
The epicenter of the earthquake was pinpointed south of Johannesburg, specifically 2 kilometers south of Harmony Doornkop Gold Mine.
To gather more information and create a comprehensive report, the public is encouraged to share their personal experiences by using the available online questionnaire.
Reinforcing the confirmation, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi also acknowledged the occurrence of the earthquake.
