ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula expressed serious concerns about the impact of coalition governments on service delivery in his speech at the 31st annual commemoration of Chris Hani’s assassination on Wednesday.
Mbalula described them as a roadblock, urging ANC members to consolidate efforts to secure a majority in the upcoming national elections, thereby avoiding the complexities coalitions present.
Chris Hani, remembered at the event, was the General Secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and Chief of Staff of Umkhonto We Sizwe, symbolising a stalwart history of struggle and leadership which the ANC aspires to emulate in service delivery.
Highlighting the impediments faced by coalition-led governments, Mbalula elaborated on the challenges experienced in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. Despite the ANC winning a substantial majority of wards, they were still compelled to form a coalition. “The ANC in Ekurhuleni Metro won 78 wards out of 112 wards available in Ekurhuleni. But we are forced to beg small parties like EFF, AIC, PAC, et al., which have no single wards in Ekurhuleni to govern the Metro,” Mbalula explained.
Detailed accounts of exhaustive negotiations underscored Mbalula’s frustrations, describing situations where disproportionate concessions were demanded by smaller parties, “I couldn’t sleep at Gqeberha negotiating a coalition government there, begging one guy who has 1 seat to assist us to form a government. He kept threatening to leave me to the other side if I don’t give him the mayoral position.”
The ANC Secretary-General also took the occasion to remind members of the legacy and values of Chris Hani, advocating for unity and dedication towards fulfilling the ANC’s commitments to the South African people, “As we remember Comrade Chris Hani, we need to march forward in unity and ensure that all the things the ANC is supposed to deliver to our people are delivered, and we must lead from the front.”
Mbalula concluded his address by reflecting on the significance of the commemoration, highlighting the imperative of accountability and the continuous strive for development, “When we come to this place we come to a sacred place… and when we come here every year we come to give an account on the work of the ANC.”
