Pitso Mosimane
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has taken a step to celebrate one of South Africa’s football legends, Pitso Mosimane, by bestowing upon him an honorary doctorate. The announcement came to light on Monday and has sent waves of pride across the national sporting fraternity.
Well-respected in the football community, the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach has made substantial strides not only in South Africa but across the African continent and beyond. Presently, Mosimane is associated with Abha in the Saudi Pro League, where he leads on a short-term arrangement, with prospects of an extended contract.
With a record of 19 shining trophies glistening in his cabinet, Pitso Mosimane’s career is nothing short of remarkable. His latest laurel is a testament to the years of dedication and success he has committed to the beautiful game, a journey which UJ recognized as exemplary.
“In recognition of his outstanding contributions to football, Mr Pitso Mosimane has achieved notable success as a football player and national and international coach,” revealed a statement from UJ. Mosimane’s accolades include the prestigious South African Football Association Coach of the Year award, multiple PSL Coach of the Season awards, and the 2016 CAF Coach of the Year honor.
But his impact extends beyond mere silverware; Mosimane’s candid advocacy for African football’s untapped potential, deserving of global recognition and resource investment, goes noted. Through initiatives like the Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools, he strives for the development and upliftment of the sport on the continent.
“Mr. Mosimane’s success has broken barriers and shattered stereotypes, proving that African coaches and players can excel at the highest global stages,” UJ’s statement further expressed. The university also underlined the important message Mosimane has consistently disseminated — that Africa’s talent deserves equal opportunities in the world arena.
The honorary doctorate will be formally conferred upon Mosimane during a ceremony scheduled for Thursday, July 25th, at 16:30. Professor Bettine van Vuuren, Registrar at UJ, explained the impetus behind Honorary Doctorates, saying, “An Honorary Doctorate serves as recognition for individuals who have made substantial contributions to a particular field or has offered exceptional service to society, closely aligning with the University’s vision, mission, values, and strategic objectives.”
