City Power Resumes Operations in Alexandra Following Suspension Due to Technician Assault

City Power

City Power, Johannesburg’s electricity utility, has announced the resumption of its services in Alexandra after a temporary suspension. The suspension was initiated following the assault of a technician by protesting residents earlier this week.

Incident Overview

On Tuesday evening, a City Power technician was attacked inside the Alexandra Service Delivery Centre while preparing to address a power outage affecting customers along 2nd and 7th Avenue. The assault occurred when an angry mob stormed the facility, damaging vehicles and assaulting the technician. In response, City Power suspended all services in the area, citing concerns for employee safety.

Resumption of Services

Following a constructive meeting with community leaders on Wednesday, City Power has decided to resume operations in Alexandra. The discussions focused on ensuring the safety of technicians and preventing future incidents. City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena emphasized the importance of community cooperation, stating, “We strongly condemn these actions because when people do not have electricity, attacking other people that are supposed to provide that service or damaging municipal or government infrastructure is something that only serves to exacerbate the situation.”

Community Impact and Response

The suspension of services had significant implications for Alexandra residents, many of whom were left without electricity during the halt in operations. Community leaders have expressed their commitment to working closely with City Power to ensure the safety of all personnel and to facilitate uninterrupted service delivery.

Safety Measures and Future Precautions

To prevent similar incidents, City Power is implementing additional safety protocols, including increased security at service delivery centers and enhanced communication channels between the utility and the community. Residents are urged to express their grievances through peaceful and constructive means, ensuring that essential services remain operational.
