City Power
By Thobeka Makume
City Power is grappling with significant strain on its electricity system after recent storms caused flooding and widespread damage to infrastructure across Johannesburg. The utility has received over 3,000 outage queries from affected customers, with areas such as Roodepoort, Hursthill, Reuven, and Randburg being the hardest hit.
Flooding and Infrastructure Damage
The severe weather conditions have led to flooding in several parts of the city, damaging substations, power lines, and other critical infrastructure. This has resulted in extensive power outages, leaving thousands of households and businesses without electricity.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena noted that the utility is operating under significant pressure, with a backlog of outage reports caused by limited holiday manpower.
Response Challenges
Mangena acknowledged that the utility’s response times have been slower than usual due to resource constraints. He assured customers, however, that efforts are underway to address the backlog:
“We’re looking forward to the fact that by Monday, at least we will have most of the people available to respond to some of these issues.”
He added that the utility is recalling additional resources to accelerate repairs and restore power to affected areas.
System Under Pressure
The storms have placed immense pressure on City Power’s infrastructure, exacerbating the challenges faced by the utility. Mangena warned that load-shedding or temporary outages may occur with little to no notice to relieve the strain on the system.
“With our system being under pressure, we may have a release date with little to no notice. But, we will communicate to the customers so that they can read it themselves for such an eventuality,” he said.
Conservation Appeal
In light of the challenges, City Power has urged residents to conserve electricity wherever possible to help ease the load on the system. Simple actions such as turning off non-essential appliances and lights can make a significant difference in reducing overall demand.
Affected Areas
Among the most impacted areas are:
• Roodepoort: Extensive damage to power lines and substations caused by flooding.
• Hursthill: Multiple outage queries due to storm-related infrastructure damage.
• Reuven: Substation failures and delayed repair times.
• Randburg: Large-scale outages attributed to equipment damage.
City Power has prioritised repairs in these areas but cautioned that full restoration may take time due to the extent of the damage.
Looking Ahead
City Power has emphasised the importance of preparation and communication during this challenging time. The utility is working on contingency plans to address future storm-related incidents more effectively, including improving resource allocation and enhancing customer communication channels.
