City of Tshwane Warns of Level Two Water Restrictions Amid Rising Demand

City of Tshwane

The City of Tshwane has warned that it will be forced to implement level two water restrictions if residents do not curb their water consumption. The move comes as the city struggles with water shortages due to an inability to meet growing demand.

Under level two restrictions, residents will not be allowed to use hosepipes to clean driveways, patios, and cars. Additionally, they will be prohibited from filling swimming pools, as authorities seek to preserve the limited water supply.

City Urges Residents to Save Water

Tshwane City spokesperson Selby Bokaba has urged residents to adhere to the water-saving measures, highlighting the strain on the city’s distribution network.

“It has come to the city’s attention that the levels of reservoirs and towers that supply these areas are frequently dropping inordinately. This high volume of consumption is continuously putting the city’s distribution network and Rand Water systems under severe pressure,” said Bokaba.

This latest warning follows ongoing challenges with water supply in the Gauteng region, where Rand Water, the bulk supplier, has also raised concerns over excessive consumption.

Tshwane’s Water Challenges and Previous Warnings

The City of Tshwane has faced persistent water supply challenges due to a combination of high demand, ageing infrastructure, and climate-related factors affecting reservoirs. In previous statements, officials have warned that uncontrolled water usage could lead to stricter restrictions in the near future.

Rand Water, which supplies Tshwane and other municipalities in Gauteng, has repeatedly called on municipalities and consumers to reduce their consumption to stabilise the system.

What Level Two Water Restrictions Mean for Residents

If the city enforces level two restrictions, residents will be expected to follow strict water-saving guidelines, including:

• No use of hosepipes for cleaning driveways, patios, and vehicles.
• No filling of swimming pools or water features.
• Possible time-based restrictions on household water usage.
• Encouraged use of greywater for gardening and other non-drinking purposes.

Failure to comply with the restrictions could result in penalties or fines, as the city intensifies its efforts to ensure sustainability in the supply network.

Tshwane’s Plan to Improve Water Security

In an effort to mitigate future shortages, the City of Tshwane has outlined plans to upgrade its water infrastructure, repair leaks, and improve monitoring systems to detect excessive usage. The municipality is also working closely with Rand Water to explore long-term solutions, such as alternative water sources and demand management strategies.

However, officials stress that public cooperation is critical to preventing a full-blown crisis.
