City of Cape Town
By Lerato Mpembe
The City of Cape Town’s law enforcement officers have arrested more than 70 individuals for cable theft over the past six months. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to combat the persistent issue of metal theft that disrupts critical services and poses safety risks to residents.
Strategic Operations and Increased Patrols
The City’s Metal Theft Unit has been proactive, conducting nearly 2,000 visits to known hotspots during this period to deter potential thieves. These operations have been instrumental in identifying and apprehending suspects involved in the theft and vandalism of essential infrastructure.
Integration of Advanced Technology
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, highlighted the role of technology in these successful operations. He stated, “We continue to use everything at our disposal to crack down on metal theft. This is another area where our ongoing investment into technology is being put to good use, and I imagine the return on investment will increase as we expand our use of these tools and all that they have to offer.”
