Chippa United chairman Siviwe Mpengesi has declared his support for the Nigerian national team over South Africa’s Bafana Bafana ahead of the much-anticipated 2024 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final clash happening on Wednesday.

In a statement released on social media, Mpengesi voiced his allegiance to his club’s player, Stanley Nwabali, and the Nigerian Super Eagles. “I and Chippa United FC stand behind our player Stanley Nwabali and the Nigerian Super Eagles tomorrow against South Africa Bafana Bafana. We wish the Super Eagles all the best,” Mpengesi proclaimed.

Mpengesi lauded the contributions of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and its chairman, Dr. Irvin Khoza, for their role in boosting the presence of local players at the tournament. He credited Coach Hugo Broos for his trust in domestic talent for the South African national team, a shift from previous selections favoring internationally-based players.

In addition, he commended Mamelodi Sundowns FC for their significant role in the event, marked by the induction of multiple players into the Bafana Bafana lineup. Mpengesi did not stop there. He went on to praise the Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Dr. Patrice Motsepe for presenting a remarkable AFCON tournament.

Despite acknowledging the remarkable feats of South African football and entities, Mpengesi expressed a personal conflict due to Chippa United’s ties to Nigeria through the exceptional performance of Nwabali with the Super Eagles, which has earned global attention and has brought the player, as well as his club, into the international spotlight.

“As the Chairman of Chippa United FC and as a proud South African, I find myself in a unique position during this 2023 AFCON tournament in that our very own Nigeria international Stanley Nwabali has been a revelation; his performance for the Nigerian National Team has caught the eyes of the globe, earning him and our club international acclaim,” Mpengesi added.
