The Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) and the Free State Department of Education (FSDoE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Smart Skills Centre in Phuthaditjhaba on Friday. The signing ceremony took place at the Tshiya Education Resource Centre, marking a pivotal step towards providing advanced technological training to rural communities.

Advocate Tsoarelo Malakoane, Head of Department in Education, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “This collaboration marks the beginning of a transformative partnership dedicated to bridging the digital divide and enhancing skills development through the creation of a Smart Skills Centre.”

The initiative aims to address the disparity in digital access between urban and rural areas by offering training in emerging technologies such as virtual reality, robotics, and the Internet of Things. By equipping the youth with these skills, the centre seeks to improve employability and foster innovation within the community.

Yershen Pillay, CEO of CHIETA, highlighted the broader impact of the project: “Together, we are unlocking new educational opportunities, empowering communities, and fostering a brighter, more inclusive future for all and enhancing a sustainable livelihood.”

This collaboration aligns with CHIETA’s ongoing efforts to expand digital skills training across South Africa. Since October 2022, CHIETA has launched several Smart Skills Centres in various provinces, including the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape, with plans to establish centres in all nine provinces by 2025.

The establishment of the Smart Skills Centre in Phuthaditjhaba is expected to provide free access to data and training courses for job seekers, entrepreneurs, and small businesses. The centre will be fully automated and equipped to meet Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) training requirements, ensuring that rural communities are not left behind in the digital transformation.
