Chiefs’ Academy Stars Zwane and Mashiane Loaned to Siwelele for Game Time

Chiefs’ Academy Stars Zwane and Mashiane Loaned to Siwelele for Game Time. Kaizer Chiefs academy stars Samkelo Zwane and Happy Mashiane were loaned out to Siwelele FC for the remainder of the 2025/26 season. With the transfer window in South Africa having closed on Monday night, Amakhosi announced the two players’ loan move to Siwelele, the PSL’s new kids on the block in order for the youngsters to get some much-needed game time.

Both players are products of the Kaizer Chiefs Youth Development Academy. Mashiane plays at left-back and left-wing brings valuable CAF Champions League experience, while Zwane is widely regarded as one of the most talented young midfielders in the country. Their loan spells are expected to revive the players careers and also to bring back confidence within the youngsters.

Loan Moves Announced on Transfer Deadline Day

In a last-minute deal sealed before the South African transfer window shut on Monday, 22 September 2025, Kaizer Chiefs confirmed that young talents Samkelo Zwane and Happy Mashiane have joined Siwelele FC on loan until the end of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season. The announcement came via the club’s official channels, with Chiefs expressing support for the duo’s development. “We wish both lads all the best for the rest of the season and look forward to welcoming them back to Naturena soon,” said the club via a statement.

This move is seen as a strategic decision by Chiefs’ management under head coach Nasreddine Nabi to provide the players with regular first-team football, something they have struggled to secure at Naturena this season. Siwelele FC, nicknamed the “new kids on the block” after their promotion to the PSL, offers a platform in a competitive environment where both can rebuild form and confidence. The loan does not include an option to buy, indicating Chiefs’ long-term plans for the pair.

Fans and analysts have reacted positively, viewing it as a chance for revival. Social media buzzed with comments like “Good move for their development” and “They need minutes to shine again,” reflecting optimism about their potential return stronger.

Samkelo Zwane: A Midfielder on the Mend

The 23-year-old Zwane is a highly rated player who was on the rise and expected to own a place in the starting line-up but he struggled to break into the squad. When Chiefs’ new coach Nasreddine Nabi arrived at Naturena, Zwane was given ample time to impress and was a regular feature in the starting line-up. However, He could not deliver the kind of performances expected of him, because of the high standards he displayed since he was promoted from the juniors to the senior team. He only played a handful of games last season. At Siwelele, he will have to work hard so that he is recalled by Amakhosi at the end of the season.

Zwane, a product of the Chiefs academy since age 12, made his senior debut in 2022 and quickly impressed with his vision, passing range, and composure. Regarded as one of the country’s top young midfielders, he has drawn comparisons to former Chiefs legend Siphiwe Tshabalala for his technical ability. Last season, however, injuries and stiff competition from established players like Yusuf Maart and Mduduzi Shabalala limited him to just 12 appearances, with one goal and two assists.

Nabi’s arrival in July 2025 brought hope, as Zwane featured in pre-season and early matches, but inconsistent form saw him benched. The loan to Siwelele, where he can anchor the midfield in a less pressured setup, is expected to help him regain rhythm. Siwelele coach Clinton Larsen praised the signing, noting Zwane’s “box-to-box energy” will add depth to their squad battling mid-table.

Happy Mashiane: Seeking Revival After Promising Start

Mashiane was also rising star until his performance declined. He was a key player when Amakhosi reached the Champions League final and he played against Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly of Egypt. His appearances diminished and has been struggling to win his spot back at left back where the likes of Bradley Cross and Paseka Mako have established themselves.

The 26-year-old versatile defender, capable at left-back or left-wing, broke through in 2018 and became a fan favourite during Chiefs’ run to the 2021 CAF Champions League final. He featured in the 3-0 loss to Al Ahly, gaining valuable continental experience. However, form dips and injuries sidelined him, with just 15 league appearances over the last two seasons.

Competition from new signings like Bradley Cross and the reliable Paseka Mako pushed him further down the pecking order. At Siwelele, Mashiane can rebuild confidence in a team needing defensive solidity after promotion. Larsen highlighted his “attacking flair from the back,” expecting him to contribute goals and assists.

Siwelele FC: A New Chapter in the PSL

Siwelele FC, formerly known as Bloemfontein Celtic before rebranding and promotion, entered the PSL as “the new kids on the block” for 2025/26. Based in the Free State, they aim to establish themselves with a mix of youth and experience. Signing Zwane and Mashiane on loan boosts their squad, providing quality in midfield and defence. The club, nicknamed Siwelele (meaning “we are singing” in Sesotho), has a passionate fanbase and history of developing talent.

This isn’t Chiefs’ first loan to Siwelele; past deals have seen players like Given Thibedi thrive there. For Siwelele, facing tough fixtures against teams like Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, the duo’s arrival is timely.

Chiefs’ Youth Development Strategy

Both players are products of the Kaizer Chiefs Youth Development Academy, underscoring Amakhosi’s commitment to nurturing homegrown talent. The academy, based at Naturena, has produced stars like Njabulo Blom and Mduduzi Mdantsane. Loans are a key part of the strategy, allowing youngsters to gain experience without permanent loss.

Under Nabi, Chiefs have focused on blending youth with experience, but squad depth means not all can play regularly. This season, Chiefs sit mid-table after a mixed start, with wins against AmaZulu but losses to Sundowns. The loans free up spots while developing assets.
