BY MPHO MOLOI | Chief Justice Raymond Zondo to Attend Independent Electoral Commission’s Final Results Announcement Ceremony Today
MIDRAND – South African Chief Justice Raymond Zondo is scheduled to attend the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) Final Results Announcement Ceremony for the 2024 National and Provincial Elections. The ceremony is set to take place today at 6 pm at the National Results Operations Centre, located at Gallagher Estate in Midrand.
In an official statement from his office, it was confirmed that on 06 June 2024, Chief Justice Zondo will formally receive the lists of designated Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Provincial Legislatures (MPLs) from the IEC. This will be in preparation for the initial sitting of the National Assembly, which the Chief Justice will preside over.
A Historic Voting Event
South Africans went to the polls on Wednesday, 29 May 2024, marking the nation’s seventh democratic National and Provincial elections since the right to vote was extended to all citizens. Special voting days were also held on 27 and 28 May 2024, allowing a broader swathe of the electorate to cast their votes.
This year’s elections were particularly significant due to the implementation of the Electoral Amendment Act in June 2023. This new legislation allows independent candidates to contest in the National and Provincial Elections, broadening the pool of contestants and adding a new dynamic to South Africa’s democratic process.
President Cyril Ramaphosa to Address the Nation
President Cyril Ramaphosa is also expected to attend, participate, and address the gathering.
Legal Challenges and Political Tensions
In a surprising turn of events, more than 20 political parties have sent their legal representatives to prevent the IEC from announcing the election results today. Among these parties are the ACC, ACP, ACT, ACDP, SUN, COPE, UDM, XILUVA, AADP, PA, CIASA, PMC, AHC, AMC, ARA, UAT, AM4C, APC, AL-JAMAH, SARA, MK, UIM, SARKO, ATM, and OHM. They demand that the IEC address alleged irregularities before making any official announcements.
ANC Faces Historic Loss
Preliminary results hint at a significant political shift. For the first time in 30 years, the African National Congress (ANC) appears poised to lose its majority in the National Assembly. As of the latest count, the ANC has received just over 40% of the votes, a considerable drop from the 57.5% it garnered in the previous election.
This decline suggests that the ANC will lose approximately 70 seats in the National Assembly, reducing its representation from 230 seats in the 6th Parliament to around 160 seats. This election could be a watershed moment for South African politics, marking a shift away from ANC dominance.
