By Mpho Moloi – Chief Justice Raymond Zondo is set to receive the official name lists of Members of the National Assembly and Provincial Legislatures on Thursday. The announcement follows the recent National and Provincial Elections, with the results declared by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) just last week.

Established Post-Election Practice

According to the Office of the Chief Justice, this is a well-established tradition in South Africa. After the IEC announces the results of the National and Provincial Elections, they promptly hand over the lists of designated Members of Parliament (MPs) and members of Provincial Legislatures to the Chief Justice. The Chief Justice then forwards these lists to the Secretary of Parliament.

“In line with this practice, Chief Justice R M M Zondo will on 06 June 2024 officially receive from the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission the lists of designated Members of Parliament (MPs) and members of Provincial Legislatures,” read the statement issued by the Office of the Chief Justice.

Preparing for the First Assembly Sitting

Following the handover, Chief Justice Zondo is expected to pass on the National Assembly lists to the Secretary of Parliament. This move is crucial as it sets the stage for the first sitting of the newly elected National Assembly.

“The Chief Justice also transmits the lists of designated members of the Provincial Legislatures to the designated Judges President who will preside over the first sittings of the Provincial Legislatures,” the statement further explained. This action ensures that designated judges are prepared to oversee the initial sessions of the Provincial Legislatures, marking the beginning of a new legislative term.

Chief Justice Zondo’s Role and Responsibilities

Chief Justice Raymond Zondo’s role is pivotal in maintaining the transition from election results to functional governance. The official handing over of member lists is not merely symbolic; it is a crucial administrative step that ensures the seamless operation of South Africa’s democratic institutions.
