Anabela Rungo, the mother of renowned beauty queen Chidimma Adetshina,

South African authorities have detained Anabela Rungo, the mother of renowned beauty queen Chidimma Adetshina, on charges of immigration violations. The arrest, conducted by the Department of Home Affairs in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), took place on the morning of 15 February 2025 at a residence in Cape Town.

Background of the Arrest

The Department of Home Affairs had previously revoked Ms. Rungo’s South African documentation in September 2024 after uncovering that it was fraudulently obtained. This revocation rendered her ineligible to reside in South Africa legally. Despite this, Ms. Rungo allegedly continued to live in the country using her Mozambican passport, thereby defying her “undesirable” status.

During the operation, officials also discovered Ms. Rungo residing with her underage grandchild, the child of Ms. Adetshina. This finding has prompted the involvement of the Department of Social Development and the SAPS Child Protection Unit to ensure the child’s welfare.

Official Statement

Siya Qoza, spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs, stated:

“Investigators from the Department of Home Affairs, assisted by the South African Police Service (SAPS), this morning detained Ms. Anabela Rungo, the mother of Ms. Chidimma Adetshina, at a property in Cape Town. The Department withdrew Ms. Rungo’s South African documentation in September 2024 after finding that it had been fraudulently obtained, rendering her ineligible to continue residing in South Africa.”

Mr. Qoza further emphasized the ongoing nature of the investigation, highlighting potential additional misrepresentation and fraudulent activities associated with Ms. Rungo’s continued stay in the country.

Implications for Chidimma Adetshina

This arrest adds another layer to the ongoing controversy surrounding Ms. Adetshina’s nationality and her participation in beauty pageants. In 2024, Ms. Adetshina faced scrutiny during her participation in the Miss South Africa pageant due to questions about her citizenship. Subsequent investigations revealed that her mother’s South African citizenship was fraudulently obtained, leading to Ms. Adetshina withdrawing from the competition. She later represented Nigeria in the Miss Universe 2024 pageant, securing the first runner-up position and earning the title of Miss Universe Africa and Oceania.

Legal Proceedings and Child Welfare

Following her detention, Ms. Rungo is set to be processed by Home Affairs for her alleged illegal residence in South Africa. She will subsequently be handed over to the SAPS, as she is also under investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks). The presence of Ms. Adetshina’s underage child at the residence has raised concerns, leading to collaboration between Home Affairs, the Department of Social Development, and the SAPS Child Protection Unit to safeguard the child’s interests.
