Centurion Intersection Closed Indefinitely Due to Flood Damage

The City of Tshwane has announced the indefinite closure of the intersection at End Street, Rabie Street, and John Vorster Drive in Centurion following recent heavy rains that have compromised the road’s integrity.

City spokesperson Lindela Mashigo stated that engineers conducted a visual inspection, revealing that a section of the road leading to the low-water End Street Bridge has been washed away. “The road layer works need to be reconstructed before the road surface can be patched. If all goes according to plan, it will take approximately three weeks to complete, though the start date for repairs cannot be stated as the road layers are still highly saturated,” Mashigo explained.

The intersection will remain closed until further notice to allow for comprehensive assessments and the implementation of additional safety measures. Mashigo urged motorists not to remove the barriers, emphasizing that unauthorized use of the compromised road could lead to further damage and pose risks to vehicle occupants. “It is not in anybody’s best interest to make use of a road that is compromised,” he added.

This closure is the latest in a series of infrastructure challenges faced by Centurion due to heavy rainfall. In December 2024, severe flooding resulted in the tragic drowning of a motorcyclist and a motorist, highlighting the dangers posed by compromised roads and bridges in the area.

Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes and exercise caution when traveling through areas affected by recent heavy rains. The City of Tshwane has apologized for the inconvenience caused by the unexpected closure and has requested road users’ compliance and patience during this period.
