The Free State Provincial Government, under the astute leadership of Premier Mxolisi Dukwana, joined forces with the People’s Republic of China to commemorate a remarkable milestone – 25 years of successful diplomatic relations.
The grand event, held in the picturesque Bloemfontein, within the vibrant Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, showcased the deep bonds between these two nations on Sunday.
Over the past quarter-century, these two nations have significantly strengthened their bilateral relations, particularly in terms of economics. China has become South Africa’s largest global trading partner, contributing to a flourishing economic partnership that benefits both countries.
Premier Mxolisi Dukwana led a high-level delegation to the event, which included notable members such as the MEC for Finance Gadija Brown, MEC for Health Mathabo Leeto, MEC for Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs Thabo Meeko, as well as the Director-General of the Free State Provincial Government, Kopung Ralikontsane.
Highlighting the importance of this milestone, Premier Dukwana emphasized the commendable relationship between the two nations and called on other countries to invest in the province. Furthermore, he announced that Hangda, a Chinese company specializing in metal recycling and steel production, had recently been inaugurated in Thaba Nchu. This company is expected to employ up to 5,000 individuals, demonstrating the positive impact of the South Africa-China economic collaboration.
In his State of the Province Address earlier this year, Premier Dukwana underscored the government’s commitment to economic growth and job creation. The Free State province has devised eleven economic sector Master Plans and is currently revising the Free State Growth and Development Strategy to create a conducive environment for inclusive growth, investment attraction, economic transformation, and job opportunities.
This investment-focused approach is now yielding promising results. Premier Dukwana stated during the celebration that China has proven to be a valuable ally to South Africa, with the Free State province experiencing significant benefits. He also highlighted the strategic advantage of the province’s central location, presenting numerous possibilities for economic expansion and job creation.
Premier Dukwana reiterated his commitment to seeking investments from countries around the world, with a particular focus on the People’s Republic of China, leveraging the strong existing relationship between the two nations. He encouraged businesses in the province to strengthen existing partnerships or establish new connections with Chinese counterparts.
His Excellency Zhongdong Tang, the Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China, highlighted the significant growth in trade between China and South Africa, including the Free State province. He stated that over 200 Chinese companies have invested a total of $30 billion in South Africa, creating approximately 32,000 jobs in the process.
Looking ahead, Premier Dukwana will lead a delegation to Asia next month to engage with potential investors and persuade them to invest in the Free State province, tapping into the province’s unique opportunities and potential for economic growth.
