Case of 10 Axed MK Party MPs Postponed to September 3 as Zuma Prepares to Address the Nation

The legal battle involving ten expelled Members of Parliament (MPs) from the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has been postponed to September 3, 2024. These former MPs, who were among 18 dismissed earlier this month, have taken their case to the Western Cape High Court, seeking an urgent interdict to prevent the swearing-in of their replacements while their review application is pending. They argue that their expulsion was unjust and without explanation, and they are demanding reinstatement.

Represented by Attorney Wendy Cele and Advocate Simba Chithando, the expelled MPs include prominent figures such as Thamsanqa Khuzwayo, Isaac Menyatso, and Citron Motshegoe. The group claims that their removal was part of a broader plan to make room for recent defectors from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), including high-profile figures like Floyd Shivambu and Mzwanele Manyi, who have recently joined the MK Party.

In the midst of these legal challenges, former President Jacob Zuma, the leader of the MK Party, is set to address the nation on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at a pivotal media conference in Johannesburg. According to the MK Party, Zuma’s address will focus on the current political landscape and the future direction of the party. He is expected to discuss the recent turmoil within the MK Party, including the expulsions, the defection of Shivambu and Manyi, and the party’s strategic plans as it positions itself within South Africa’s political scene.

This address comes at a critical time for the MK Party, which has been plagued by internal strife and accusations of dictatorship. Recent reports suggest that the party is struggling with issues of instability and mistrust, with critics alleging that Zuma is running the party with an “iron fist.” The upcoming media conference is anticipated to shed light on these issues and outline the party’s strategy moving forward, particularly in light of its alliances with other opposition parties like the EFF.
