Cape Town Spurs were unable to overcome a dominant Mamelodi Sundowns, suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat in the DStv Premiership at the Athlone Stadium on Tuesday evening.
From the onset, Mamelodi Sundowns seized control of the game, commanding over 70 per cent of the possession in the first half. Their attacking onslaught proved challenging for the Cape Town Spurs, with the Pretoria-based team relentlessly testing the home side’s defence.
The sheer pressure from Sundowns eventually paid off. Lucas Ribeiro, a standout performer, found himself taking two promising shots by the 18th minute, signalling Sundowns’ comfort and dominance on the field.
Spurs’ Ashley Cupido tried to swing the momentum with a volleyed attempt, but his effort strayed far from the target. The dynamic of the game saw a significant shift in the 40th minute when Sundowns were awarded a penalty as Peter Shalulile was fouled inside the box. Lucas Ribeiro confidently converted the penalty, securing a 1-0 lead for Sundowns just minutes before halftime.
Despite trailing, the Cape Town Spurs showed no sign of conceding further, entering the break with a minimal deficit. The second half saw a resurgence from the Urban Warriors, yet Sundowns’ solid defence quelled any hopes of a comeback.
Spurs had moments that hinted at a potential equaliser, including a free-kick from Liam Bern that failed to materialise into a goal. Similarly, Junior Mendieta nearly extended Sundowns’ advantage, only to be stopped by the defenders.
In a final push, Cape Town Spurs intensified their efforts to salvage a point, coming agonisingly close when Cupido’s shot hit the crossbar during the concluding moments of the match. However, the league leaders managed to withstand the late pressure, securing three crucial points and leaving the Spurs languishing in 16th place.
Final Score: Cape Town Spurs 0, Mamelodi Sundowns 1 (Ribeiro 42’)
Despite the loss, the Cape Town Spurs showcased a resilient spirit against a formidable Mamelodi Sundowns side. Both teams will look to build on this encounter as they progress through the remainder of the DStv Premiership season.
