The Cape Town Spurs found themselves facing the hard truth of relegation from the DStv Premiership this past weekend. This outcome was set in stone after Richards Bay pulled off a stunner by defeating the heavyweights, Orlando Pirates, with a close 1-0 victory at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
As teams battled on the field, the Kaizer Chiefs were fighting their own war at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, striving to secure the eighth spot with a tighter grip. Yet, despite leading the match, they were held to a 1-1 draw by AmaZulu. Usuthu managed to equalize in the first half, leaving both teams to walk away with a point each.
The surprises didn’t stop there. The weekend saw Moroka Swallows ending Stellenbosch’s impressive 20-match unbeaten streak with a 2-0 win at the Dobsonville Stadium. This leaves the door slightly ajar for the Pirates in the race for second place, as they linger just a point behind the Stellies.
In what might have been seen as a glimmer of hope for the Cape Town Spurs, their Friday evening match against SuperSport United ended in a stalemate with no goals to celebrate. However, the elation was short-lived as Richards Bay’s victory on Saturday dashed their hopes, confirming their automatic relegation, a bitter pill for Ernst Middendorp and his squad.
The narrative of drawn matches continued into Sunday, with Cape Town City and TS Galaxy ending their face-off with a 1-1 draw at the DHL Stadium. Similar outcomes were observed in the engagements between Golden Arrows and Chippa United, as well as the closely watched match between AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs, both culminating in 1-1 stalemates.
