Cape Town authorities have arrested a man suspected of arson in connection with the ongoing wildfire ravaging the Tokai and Silvermine sections of Table Mountain National Park. The fire, which ignited on Friday, has already scorched over 3,000 hectares of vegetation and remains uncontained.

Arrest Made Amidst Escalating Fire
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, confirmed that law enforcement officers apprehended the suspect after receiving reports of an individual seen ascending the mountain in Clovelly. The man was found near a newly ignited fire, separate from the main fire line, and was arrested on charges of arson.
Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was deliberately set, with multiple ignition points identified in the Tokai area. Authorities believe the coordinated nature of these fires indicates malicious intent.
⸻
Firefighting Efforts Intensify
More than 200 firefighters are currently battling the blaze, supported by aerial resources including helicopters conducting water-bombing operations. Despite these efforts, the fire remains active on multiple fronts, exacerbated by dry conditions and strong winds.
The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre has activated officials and volunteers to support fire services in coordinating relief efforts in the affected areas.
⸻
Road Closures and Public Safety
Traffic authorities have urged the public to avoid non-essential travel in areas affected by the wildfires. While Ou Kaapse Weg has reopened, several roads remain closed due to the fire’s impact:
• Westlake Drive and Boyes Drive
• Tokai Road and Zwaanswyk Road
• Old Boyes and Boyes Drive
• Boyes and Anderson Road
• Main Road and Old Boyes Drive
• Main Road and Boyes Drive
• Main and Clairvaux Drive
Traffic spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout noted that these closures are necessary to facilitate firefighting operations and ensure public safety.
⸻
Environmental Impact and Community Response
The wildfire has devastated approximately 3,000 hectares of vegetation, including sections of the unique fynbos biome endemic to the region. While no structural damage has been reported, the ecological impact is significant.
Community members have rallied to support firefighting efforts, providing meals and supplies to crews working around the clock. Authorities have also called for increased vigilance and reporting of any suspicious activities to prevent further incidents.
⸻
Ongoing Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The arrested suspect is expected to appear in court soon. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire’s ignition, with a focus on determining the full extent of the suspect’s involvement and identifying any potential accomplices.
⸻
Safety Tips and Reporting
Residents and visitors are advised to:
• Avoid affected areas and adhere to road closures.
• Report any signs of fire or suspicious activity to emergency services.
• Stay informed through official channels for updates on the fire’s status.
